Intercity rail line closed by fire

THE Sydney to Melbourne rail line has been closed due to bushfires in southern New South Wales.

New South Wales Police said the rail line was expected to remain closed until tomorrow morning.

A fire north of Albury is affecting areas around Gerogery and Gerogery West north of Albury, with several houses reportedly burning last night.

The Rural Fire Service says these outbreaks could get out of control if a predicted southerly wind change occurs, threatening Woomargama, Mullegandra, Mountain Creek and Tabletop.

Police said the Olympic Way, north of Albury, has been closed and will remain closed until further notice.

"Motorists are being advised to take care whilst travelling through fire-affected areas and obey the directions of all emergency services on site,'' police said.
