Light rail for Hobart proposal

Light Rail For Hobart Proposal - 08/12/2009

The possibility of a light rail service for Hobart would become increasingly attractive as the city deals with the interlinked issues of climate change and urban transport, Minister Assisting the Premier on Climate Change Lisa Singh said today.

“The Government study on urban public transport is already looking at the issue of light rail using the existing rail corridor from Granton to the centre of Hobart.

“Light rail offers the opportunity for a win-win on climate change and urban transport.

“This is an important debate and I urge people to join me and attend the forum at Moorilla on Wednesday at 4.30pm to hear more about the proposal by Kristie and Ben Johnston for a battery powered light rail service.

“As the Premier has said the work being done now is looking at what is feasible for the long-term.

“I have met with the Johnston’s and what they have presented is an innovative approach.

“While there is more work to do, the existence of the rail line and the move of rail freight out of the city to Brighton creates an opportunity.

“This is still very much in its formative stages and issues of funding, particularly Australian Government funding, will still need to be addressed.

“Nevertheless in tackling climate change and cutting emissions from urban transport we need to be looking well ahead,” Ms Singh said.
