Theebine-Kingaroy rail line closed

THE Theebine–Kingaroy rail branch line has now closed.

Consultation between the Department of Transport and Main Roads, South Burnett and Gympie Regional councils has determined that costs associated with ongoing maintenance of the disused line were not good use of public funds.

Acting Main Roads Minister Rachel Nolan said greater benefits could be gained by diverting the projected $19 million needed to maintain the line for another 10 years into projects that would deliver an improved community benefit.

“The government has agreed to bring forward the 10 years of savings into the next five years to provide a more immediate benefit. The community projects were identified by the councils and are primarily for roads. This funding is additional to that already identified for the local government areas under the Five Year Roads Implementation Program,” she said.

Gympie Regional Council Deputy Mayor Tony Perrett said both councils were consulted and fully supported this decision.
