Job Description

Primary Job Responsibilities

This position will oversee all design-build efforts related to trackwork engineering on the RTD FasTracks Eagle P3 project. The chosen candidate will review and oversee the design and construction of horizontal and vertical alignments, typical cross sections, roadway and trackwork design, station interface and construction phasing. This position will require interaction between RTD Eagle Project Management Team and the design-build contractor. Additional interaction with other staff members and relevant departments inside the RTD organization as well as outside groups including public jurisdictions and/or private stakeholders will be required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

§ Conducts self in an appropriate manner as a representative of RTD, working effectively in a diverse work environment.
§ Acts as a trackwork resource to Eagle Project staff.
§ Supports Eagle Project staff in providing technical information for presentations or reports.
§ Performs, reviews, and coordinates all issues related to the design, procurement and installation of track. This includes horizontal and vertical track alignments, turnouts and track structure elements, hardware, track/wheel interface, track and structure interaction and stress analysis, rail welding, storage, installation and maintenance requirements.
§ Monitors all trackwork related construction activities and any other civil construction contracts assigned.
§ Supports and represents RTD at various negotiations with private stakeholders (especially UP and/or BNSF railroads) as a technical expert.
§ Performs, reviews, and evaluates trackwork and civil designs to ensure adequacy and completeness, verifying that they meet the necessary fabrication, construction, operation, safety, and maintenance requirements.
§ Prepares and makes presentations to various groups including the RTD Board of Directors, Board Committees, PUC, citizen and private interest groups as required.
§ Coordinates projects with local, state, regional and federal agencies, including the railroads, to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
§ Coordinates trackwork design efforts with civil, systems, and structural engineering.
§ Evaluates trackwork related issues, preparation of cost estimates, review and coordination of design and project submittals, field verification and related efforts.
§ Generally takes direction from the Project Managers and the Systems Integration Manager

Training and Experience

§ A Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is required
§ Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado is preferred
§ Extensive and progressive transportation experience in planning, design, construction and maintenance of roadway, railroad, commuter rail and light rail facilities, with a strong emphasis on trackwork and alignment design, drainage, traffic control and construction phasing is required
§ Experience using Micro-Station and Intergraph civil design application software is required
§ A demonstrated ability to develop and design track alignments for the railroads, commuter rails and LRT including horizontal and vertical alignments, trackwork design, systems and station interface.
§ A working knowledge in civil, track, railroad and transportation engineering principles including construction practices and safety, specification writing and estimating, construction phasing, and codes and standards governing railroads and transit improvement projects.
§ A clear understanding of applicable engineering standards including AREMA, AASHTO, UPRR and BNSF Railroad standards.
§ Ability to understand complex engineering plans and specification, and resolve complex design problems.
§ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
§ Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate projects.
§ Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
